Default Put sovereignty on backburner, says PQ stalwart

It's a shame that the nanny filter is on. It softens my opinion of these condescending PQ-types who dismiss those of us in QC who think that sovereignty is a stupid idea that should be abandoned for once and for all.

These morons have been bleating for independence for half a century. If they are not 'ready' by now, I don't think we'll ever be 'ready' to mess with one of the best places in the planet (any more than we have).

I'd be happier for the Conservatives to organise provincially and win an election than ever see the PQ run the show despite an appreciation for the slightly left-of-centre political position than other parties.

BÉCANCOUR, Que. — A cynical electorate isn't ready to hear arguments in favour of Quebec sovereignty, a prominent Parti Québécois stalwart admitted Wednesday at a party meeting.

François Legault, a PQ member of the legislature, says sovereignty will have to sit on the backburner until politicians of all stripes regain the trust of Quebecers.

“People are not ready to have collective projects proposed to them because they've lost confidence in politicians,” Mr. Legault told reporters outside a caucus meeting.

“If we want to be able to sell to people the importance of having one state, they have to have confidence in the state. Right now, I see a lot of cynicism.”

PQ Leader Pauline Marois, who took over the party last year, set aside a timeline for holding a referendum, saying the PQ had to convince Quebecers of the relevance of independence.

However Mr. Legault's blast of pessimism is unusual in a party whose entire raison d'être is separation of the province from Canada.

“You have to be realistic,” Mr. Legault said. “Right now it's very difficult to talk about collective projects of any kind, whether it's for the environment or big project like sovereignty.”

Mr. Legault said the rebuilding will come in two steps. The entire political class must regain the trust of voters and the PQ will have to come to power with solutions for a lagging economy and problems in health and education.

Government inaction at the federal and provincial levels aren't helping, he said.

“Right now everyone is hiding and we are turning around in circles in Quebec,” Mr. Legault said.

Why doesn't the PQ abide by the will of its constituent the majority of whom don't want separation, instead of trying to convince them they're wrong?

You can blame our so-called leaders like Paul Martin and Stephen Harper for patronizing people like Jean Charest to get a political base in Quebec. Otherwise, sovergintry would have been dead issue long time ago.

Yeah but what else can they do? Without a base in Quebec they can't get elected.

I'd put the blame at Mulroney's feet. He was the one that assembled the unholy coalition of western conservatives and separatists with the promise of further decentralisation. The separatist movement was already sputtering in the 80s when the Meech lake nonsense and the subsequent perception of being slapped in the face revived them for a while.
